Why take a retreat? What is a retreat?
There are many kinds of retreats-personal retreats, day long, weekend long, weeklong, and even longer. There are silent meditation retreats, dance and yoga packages, adventure get aways, girlfriend weekends, writing weeks, spa visits, art-making. Lots of them.
To look at definitions of retreats…"The noun retreat means a place you can go to be alone, to get away from it all. A spot under a shady tree might be your favorite retreat from the sun, or your bedroom in the basement may serve as a retreat from your siblings. In the military sense, the noun retreat means the withdrawal of troops."
Wikipedia states "The meaning of a spiritual retreat can be different for different religious communities. Spiritual retreats are an integral part of many Hindu, Buddhist, Christian and Sufi communities. In Hinduism and Buddhism, meditative retreats are seen by some as an intimate way of deepening powers of concentration and insight.'
A retreat is for what purpose? To somehow make us ultimately feel good, to feel better, feel healthier, see more clearly, have some down time, get inspired, extra relaxation, to get in shape, to make plans, to find God, to work the body, to rest the body, to eat great food, to fast. I could keep going but ideally retreats feed us in someway.
Feed our body, feed our minds, feed our souls.
How important is that?
I believe it is ultra necessary, to get away from our daily routine, to get away from our daily peoples, to try something new, go somewhere exotic, take some down time, learn something new, and get out of our comfort zone. And expand! To continue growing as a human, to see with different eyes and hear with different ears. Sometimes these times can question our beliefs, which will make us stronger. Sometimes we need to feel a creative spirit renewal. Ask ourselves questions. Listen to others share.
I have led retreats for over 25 years, around the world, in many shapes and sizes. Gatherings, festivals, hot springs, nature based, movement based, and I always use journaling/writing as a major component. I love to guide women on inner and outer journeys, exploration into themselves, with the idea of listening and sharing with others. Inspiration flows, hearts open, bodies glisten with renewal, eyes see things you don't normally see, as we slow down to look around.
During those retreats I taught at, I saw lots of 'a-ha'moments, new ideas, lots of tears and revelations, good hard laughter, friendships made, soul-sister making, and sharing– so important. To listen to each other, deeply, but also to be heard. We all want to be heard…BAM!
So, taking time for oneself, the ultimate in self-care, retreats can open up another world. Focusing on yourself is so good, rejuvenating. Allowing oneself to do this is one of the hardest things I've witnessed women going through(as I work predominantly with women). Lots of "I can't afford it", or " I don't have time," or "I've always wanted to do that, maybe next year", and "I can't do that for myself, what about my family?". I know we can all find reasons NOT to do something. But really, you can make it happen if you want. Your choice. So what is stopping you from loving yourself, from stepping away to get a clearer vision, to taking some down time or visiting some awesome new place? Fear of stepping outside the box, trying something different. Or what?
I for one, never want to live with regret. I have always gone after what I wanted, and jump to try something new. That would be something to care for myself and to expand my life on some level, could be a business retreat or a pleasure retreat. I've done them all and all is freaking awesome. I want awesome. I want to look with awe, to experience myself in different ways, and that means life on different levels. I don't ever want to stop myself from living, from experiencing. That might be a vacation with my husband or friends, or it' important that I also take a retreat for myself, and usually often!
Time for myself. Because I need that, continuously. We tend to fill ourselves up so much with busy this and busy that, computer screens in every vista, texting crazy, projects galore. To get out and see the world in a different way, is to see ourselves in a new way too. That gives me strength, clarity, joy…to know that I am living full on. And feed myself!
So friends, make this year a year for you. To dive further into your self-care and self-love, to open up to receive the gifts of the world, to allow yourself this special kind of time, to expand your vision, which can also expand your business and your pleasure! Make you first on the list, then think of the trickle down effect. You take time for you, to make yourself happy, feel freakin' fabulous ( that's the FF Club!), and your friends notice and are inspired. They do the same, etc, etc. Win win win… all the way around. And experience what the world has to offer you.
Let me know where you go and how it changes you!
